Frequently Asked Questions

Section 164 of the Income Tax Ordinance, 2001 requires every person who deducts or collects tax (under Division II or III of Part V of Chapter X, or Chapter XII) to give the payee a certificate with copies of the CPRs. The format is prescribed in Rule 42 of the Income Tax Rules, 2002; salary certificates follow the employer format.

Salary 149, dividend 150, profit on debt 151/151A, non-residents 152, goods/services/contracts 153(1)(a)(b)(c), 153(2), exports 154/154A, rent 155, prizes 156, petroleum commission 156A, brokerage/commission 233, and advance taxes 231AB, 231B, 234, 235, 236, 236A, 236C, 236G, 236H, 236K, 236Y, 236Z, plus 148, 6A and 154B. Any other section can be typed in.

The payee claims the tax shown on the certificate as advance / adjustable tax (or final tax where applicable) in the annual income tax return. FBR matches it with the withholding statements filed by the agent, so the CPR details must be correct.

Rates follow the Tax Card for Tax Year 2026-27 (non-ATL rates are generally double). Some payments have special conditions or exemption certificates under section 159. Always confirm the rate before deducting, or contact us for help.
