A proforma invoice is a preliminary bill sent to a buyer before the goods are supplied. It confirms the items, prices, taxes and terms so the buyer can arrange payment.
When is it used?
- To ask for an advance payment before production or dispatch
- To open a letter of credit (LC) or get bank / import approvals
- As a formal price quotation for a confirmed order
Proforma vs sales tax invoice
A proforma invoice is not a tax invoice: it is not recorded as a sale and the buyer cannot claim input tax on it. After supply, issue a sales tax invoice (or a normal invoice).
